Printmaking for Christmas Cards

Jillian Kurzmann
12/11/18

  • My goals and intentions for this project were to carve deep enough to show the detail of the design.
  • I accomplished my goals by carving over each line twice and spreading the words out enough.
  • I was surprised at how easily the Linoleum Gauge can slip if you are not careful.
  • The most difficult challenge was the lettering and the garland by all of the details and curves.
  • I met that challenge by taking my time to really carve everything deep enough without messing up the wording.
  • I experienced the shift to right brain by focusing on each shape I was carving instead of the overall picture.
  • My work really works with the fire place and garland.
  • Something I learned to bring into my next art piece is to spread the lettering out and to not squish it all together.
  • If I had a do-over I would make the borders bigger and more visible.
  • I feel the best things are the fire and the garland.

Self Portrait Through A Sphere

Jillian Kurzmann
12/3/18

  • My goals and intentions of this project were to learn how to see the shapes though the ball and to not draw detail.
  • I accomplished them by using the right side of my brain and just looking at the shapes.
  • I was surprised how hard it is to not draw detail and just focus on the bigger picture.
  • The most difficult challenge for my was to make the colors have a blue background.
  • I met that challenge by adding blue on top or underneath each color.
  • I experienced the shift to right brain when I looked at the shapes instead of the huge picture.
  • My drawing really works with my hair and my hand.
  • Somethings I learned to bring to my next drawing are curving things to make it look 3D.
  • Another artist I learned a lot from was Holly and how to curve things.
  • If I had a do-over I would make the lights brighter.
  • I feel the best things are the hand and the reflection of my face.

Self Portrait

Jillian Kurzmann
11/16/18

  • My goals and intentions in this project were to master the side of my face and to learn how to shade properly.
  • I accomplished them by learning how to draw my nose and lips and by learning how to blend.
  • I was surprised by how much easier it was to draw my face on bigger paper than smaller paper.
  • The most difficult challenge I had to face was to not draw lines for my lips with the charcoal.
  • I met that challenge by "drawing" the lines with my eraser and shaping them.
  • I experienced the shift to the right brain by looking at the shapes and shadows and not the overall picture.
  • My drawing really works with my nose and the shape of it.
  • Somethings I have learned to bring into my next drawing are how to shade and how to see the light shadows.
  • Another artist in the class that I learned from was Ashley and I learned how to blend.
  • If I had a do-over I would make the picture bigger to touch the edges of the paper.
  • I feel the best things about my work are the nose and the eye.

Charcoal Pumpkin Piece

Jillian Kurzmann
10/31/18

  1. My goals and intentions for this project were to learn how to draw and shade realistically.
  2. I accomplished my goals by learn how to shade properly and blend the charcoal better.
  3. My painting is about dramatic shadows and smoothness of the shading.
  4. The most difficult challenge I faced was learning how to shade the creases of the lines on the pumpkin.
  5. I met that challenge by blending the lines and using highlights.
  6. My painting really works with the skull and how the shading of the skull adds dimension.
  7. Somethings that I have learned that I can bring to into my next painting is how to shade and add dimension.
  8. The mentor that I can name that helped me were the Wyatts and how to blend and make my painting realistic looking.
  9. Another artist that I learned from was Ashley wmake the background as hoe to make my pumpkins look round and add to the dramatic lighting.
  10. If I had a do-over, I would make the background pumpkin smaller.
  11. I feel best about my skull and the pumpkin between the bird and the skull.

Joy Series

My Aerial Silks

  • My goals and intentions in this artwork are to express my love for aerial and also show the beauty of the silk fabric that I use.
  • I accomplished my goals by cropping part of me out of the photos to put the main focus on the fabric and how it moves.
  • What surprised me most about my experience doing this drawing is how hard it is to draw moving fabric and all of the wrinkles.
  • The most difficult challenge I had to face was drawing the back of my head in the middle picture.
  • I met that challenge by focusing more on the shapes of my head and less on the overall picture.
  • I experienced the shift to right brain artistic thinking when I focused on the colors and shapes and less on over-analyzing the over all picture.
  • A dull pencil makes a dull drawing.
  • When in doubt, sketch it out.
  • Draw a star and you will go far.
  • Draw the shapes.
  • My drawing really works in the middle picture because of the wrinkles and shading in the fabric.
  • Some things I have learned that I can take into my next drawing are: focus on the shapes, shade last, and how to make the intended focal point pop.
  • I learned from Ashley how to solidly used colored pencils without letting the white paper be seen through.
  • If I had a do-over, I would fix the shape of the back of my head and add more detail to it.
  • I feel the best thing about my work is the shading and angling of the silks and body parts.

Family/ unposed pictures

This picture represents family because it is of my dog and she is a big part of my family.

This represents family to me because my dad and I always share cheesy fries at chili's.

This picture represents family because Connor and I are like brother and sister.

This picture represents family to me because the theatre department is a family and they are my family.

This picture is family because Mucha, Connor, and I are a family because we are so close.

JPG Challenge #2

The vampire pose brings me joy because it helps me express myself and feels free.

The heron pose brings me joy because it helps me relax and go to another world.

Theatre brings me joy because it interests me and makes me feel like I belong somewhere.

Inverting brings me joy because makes feel as if I am going into a different world.

The auditorium brings me joy because it is a place where I feel safe and comfortable.

Alex Katz

I enjoyed doing Alex Katz because he shows character with little detail. I learned how to shade better and blend with water color.
